Season1/Chapter4
"Vulture"
Eleanor Kingston, wife to Atlas Kingston, showered and got dress for work. She is a librarian by trade. She works at the Davie, Florida Downtown Library. She works there part-time and enjoys every minute of it. She went in today, like every other day, feeling happy and joyous. She loves books and the information they hold. She loves reading and helping others to develop a love for it also. In this new age of Amazon Kindle, she has had to keep up with technology. People do a lot of their reading on laptops, cell phones, ebook readers and other types of tablets. The library has conformed to this and so has she. She has learn how to use the information in this new form and is quite adapt at teaching others. Her time at the library serves to help her forget about the things that troubles her. She is so pleased that she has continued with the library even though she doesn't need the job.
She is at the help desk today and it's a little bit busy. She helps one customer set up an account with the library. She helps another learn how to access the library app for use on her phone and IPad. She helps another look for a book, the old fashion way. She had to smile at that one. The next customer up brings her into a state of shock. His name is Anderson Reed. He is standing there just gawking at her. He doesn't say anything at first and then he speaks. He said, "Hi Ellie." She looks around and no one appears to notice her state of shock. She doesn't reply. He continues, "Hi. It's been a long time." Still, Eleanor says nothing. The silence grows and there are other customers waiting behind him. He looks around slowly and said, "I need to speak to you. I think it's best if we do it in private." Eleanor Kingston gathers herself and takes a step back from the counter. She said, "where do you want to meet?" He said, "How about in one of the quiet rooms." Eleanor shakes her head in agreement and said, "Okay, go to room number 2C. It should be free. I'll meet you there in five minutes."
She heads over to room 2C. The quiet rooms are rooms used by people doing research, studying and/or using books that can not leave the library. Upon entering, she finds Anderson Reed sitting at the table in the room. He is giving her his best devilish look. She closes the door and pulls down the blind. She does the same to the rest of the blinds in the room so no one can see inside the room. She locks the door and then takes a seat at the table opposite Anderson Reed. She then said, "What do you want?" Reed is silent for a moment and said, "I wanted to see you. It's been a long time, almost ten years." Eleanor wasn't smiling. She was not being cordial. Some would say, she appeared irritated. She said, "Like I said, What do you want?"
Reed said, "Okay, okay. You are the same old Ellie, straight to the point." He leaned back in his chair and said, "You still look good. How old are you now? 38, 39." Eleanor just listened. She was waiting for the truth. Reed shook his head. He then said, "Look, I heard you came into some money. I wanted to look you up and congratulate you." Eleanor now understood. She thought to herself, "Vulture, f*cking vulture. Here to pick at the carcass." Eleanor said, "So, you heard I had some money and you've come to get your cut?" Reed's facial expression got real serious. He said, "Yeah, something like that. I thought you could spare a million or two." Eleanor laughed and said, "Well, I don't have any money to give you. So, you can f*ck off and go to hell."
Reed sat up straight and said, "I don't think so honey. There are things that I know and will share, with your husband. I don't think you want that." Eleanor closed her eyes and squinted. She then opened them and said, "So, you are here to blackmail me." Reed said, "Blackmail is such a harsh word. Let's look at it as an agreement between two old lovers." Eleanor's flesh crawled at the memory of her having slept with Reed." "Don't look so disgusted," he said. "I remember how much you enjoyed are times together. What was it? Two, Three times a week, when Atlas was at work on the night shift." Eleanor said, "That was over ten years ago. I was a much different person. It's old news now and bad memories." Reed said, "Speaking of bad memories, I'm sorry for your loss. Children should never go before their parents." Eleanor gave him an indifferent look. She said, "Yes, I can hear the sincerity in your voice." Reed did not like her tone. He said, "He was gay wasn't he and that's partially the cause of his death." Eleanor was insane with rage but she did not let it show. She said, "Alright, I'll get you the money. I need your phone number to arrange time and place. Reed looked at her the way a fox looks at a defenseless hen. He said, "One more thing, I think we should have a go for old times sake." Eleanor did not answer but took out her cell. She then said, "What's your number?"
